The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded in 1953
by seven universities who formerly belonged to the Southern Conference.
The charter members; Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North
Carolina State, South Carolina, and Wake Forest participated as a seven
team league until 1971 when South Carolina left to become an
Independent. The ACC would operate as a six team league until former
Metro Conference member Georgia Tech joined in 1978. In 1991 Florida
State left the Metro Conference to join the ACC and former Big East
members Miami and Virginia Tech joined in 2004 while Boston College
joined in 2005. |
