“Strike against Cancer” a nationwide bowling event to
benefit The V Foundation for Cancer Research announced by Ultimate Sports
Enterprises.
For Immediate Release
September 11, 2007--Charity begins at home. At least that is how the old saying
goes. It is more accurate to state that charity begins when a problem strikes
home. That is what Cancer does. Ask anyone, and they can tell you a story about
a relative, best friend, or co-worker, someone they know who has been affected
by Cancer. Currently, one out of every two men and one out of every three women
will have Cancer in their lifetime. Three out of four families in America will
have at least one family member diagnosed with Cancer.
So you ask what can one person do to fight this deadly disease. The answer is
simple. Go bowling. Bowling? Yes, bowling. On Saturday December 8th, 2007
participating bowling centers nationwide will contribute to the fight against
cancer by donating one dollar to the V Foundation for every lane rented on this
day. 70 million Americans bowl annually and Ultimate Sports Enterprises is
simply asking them to bowl on this day, like they would any other time of the
year. No extra fees, no registration, no hassle, except maybe wearing shoes that
somebody else has worn.
The V Foundation started with the dream of Jim Valvano, the passionate and
committed former NC State basketball coach and award-winning broadcaster, as he
battled cancer. Wanting to see the battle through to victory, Valvano recruited
friends and family to lead The V Foundation in his quest to eradicate the
disease that ultimately claimed his life. With a dire need for early
developmental, critical-stage grant support, the Foundation was formed to assist
the brilliant young researchers that will eventually find cures for cancer. The
V Foundation has raised more than $60 million and awarded cancer research grants
in 37 states and the District of Columbia. Researchers have developed their
laboratories and taken their science from the labs to the clinics with the help
of funds raised by The V Foundation.
“Cancer is a serious disease, but who says fighting it has to be. So gather your
friends and family and take a few hours out of your life and have some fun,”
remarked Frank Gordon, President of Ultimate Sports Enterprises. “While you are
enjoying yourself bowling, revel in the fact that you are doing something
positive for someone else, and quite possibly yourself. We have all been asked
to help out one charity or another, but with our lives as hectic as they are
it’s hard to do. Here is the chance to have a great time with the people you
care about and really make a difference.”
