In 1996 eight former members of the Big 8 Conference joined together with four former members of the Southwest Conference to form the Big 12 Conference. The Big 12 was formed as a new conference and not an expanded version of the Big 8. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State aligned with the four Texas schools; Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, and Baylor to form the Big 12 South, while Colorado, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Missouri, and Nebraska, comprise the Big 12 North.

The Big 12 fields 21 Men's and Women's championship sports though not all schools participate in all sports.
